SAP Garden starts up first photovoltaic system in the Olympic Park in August
Tuesday, 09. July 2024 | SAP Garden: First photovoltaic system in the Olympic Park goes into operation
SAP Garden starts up first photovoltaic system in the Olympic Park in August// NEWSThe Olympic Park is as much a part of Munich as the Oktoberfest. It is also home to SAP Garden, which is starting up the first photovoltaic system in the landmarked park in August.
In recent months, 799 PV modules have been installed on the 13,000 square meter roof area of the new multifunctional sports arena. The two-row photovoltaic system encloses the green roof and provides a self-sufficient energy supply for one of the building complex's three additional underground ice rinks. The PV panels will go into operation at practically the same time as these ice rinks are put into operation in August this year. On September 27, the first official event on the main ice surface of SAP Garden will be the game between Red Bull München and the Buffalo Sabres NHL team.

Until mid-2023, photovoltaic systems were not legally possible in the landmarked Olympic Park. A revision of the relevant guideline now makes it possible to generate energy using PV systems in the landmarked Olympic Park. "We are delighted to be the first building complex in the historic Olympic Park to put a photovoltaic system into operation. This heralds a new era for this important area in the heart of the city, which in this day and age should be seen as a natural part of new construction projects with regard to the important issue of sustainability," says Oliver Wesp, Business Director of SAP Garden.
SAP Garden will soon be producing its own honey on the roof
No fossil fuels are used in the entire building complex. In addition to generating energy via the 799 photovoltaic modules, which together cover an area of over 2,000 square meters, the waste heat from the ice cooling system is also used to generate energy. In addition, the groundwater ensures sustainable cooling of the building volume, which is almost two thirds underground. The existing energy delta is powered exclusively by green electricity.

By the way: the roof area is currently being planted with the same grass mixture as in the Olympic Park. The green roof is not only a visual eye-catcher, it also supports the natural cooling of the building. By next summer at the latest, several bee colonies will also be providing a constant buzz on what is perhaps Munich's largest green roof. An employee of the stadium operator has already trained as a beekeeper and will produce honey according to strict quality criteria.
