The chances that the Olympiapark, known far beyond Munich, will soon be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site continue to grow. The park, which was opened for the 1972 Summer Olympics, is now on the so-called Tentative List. This is the basis for future nominations for World Heritage status.
From this tentative list, which each nation can submit to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris, future sites are then selected to be awarded World Heritage status. An evaluation process must justify the "outstanding universal value" of the Olympic Park in an international comparison and what makes it worth preserving and protecting in the long term.
