Home of SAP Gardens could become a World Heritage Site
Thursday, 07. December 2023 | SAP Garden: Olympiapark could become a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Home of SAP Gardens could become a World Heritage Site// NEWSMunich's Olympiapark, home to the SAP Gardens currently under construction, could soon become a World Heritage Site. The Conference of Culture Ministers has added the sports and leisure site to the German list of proposals.
The chances that the Olympiapark, known far beyond Munich, will soon be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site continue to grow. The park, which was opened for the 1972 Summer Olympics, is now on the so-called Tentative List. This is the basis for future nominations for World Heritage status. From this tentative list, which each nation can submit to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris, future sites are then selected to be awarded World Heritage status. An evaluation process must justify the "outstanding universal value" of the Olympic Park in an international comparison and what makes it worth preserving and protecting in the long term.

Olympiastadion – Olympiaturm – SAP Garden In addition to the already world-famous buildings in the Olympiapark, such as the Olympiastadion and the OIympiaturm, a new building is currently being constructed on the site of the former Olympic cycling stadium: the multifunctional SAP Garden sports arena. The sports arena, which can hold up to 11,500 spectators, will be the future home of ice hockey club EHC Red Bull München and basketball club FC Bayern München, among others. In addition to the sports arena, three further covered ice sports areas are being built for training purposes and for non-competitive popular sports. The City of Munich recently signed a contract with extensive ice skating times. The SAP Garden itself stands out as an oval, independent solitaire and fits almost naturally and respectfully into the world-famous Olympiapark ensemble thanks to its natural integration. The intensively greened roof and the vertically structured façade reinforce this impression. The façade is defined by a vertical slat structure that sweeps upwards above the glazed entrances, emphasizing the main entrances. The buried training areas are modeled into a green hill, taking up the topography and enabling the logical continuation of the paths and landscaping of the Olympic Park.
